Authorities have shut down part of Highway 48 between Brownsville and Port Isabel following a liquid propane leak at the Port of Brownsville.

Fire responders said at least one man has been injured by the propane explosion and workers in certain areas of the port are being evacuated.

It’s unclear at this time how or where the propane explosion happened.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the nortside of the Port Of Brownsville has been evacuated as a precaution.

Authorities shut down about one-quarter mile of Highway 48.

Brownsville firefighters, police and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) invsetigators are all at the scene.

Around 2 p.m. Monday, officials said they are intentionally released 57,000 gallons of liquid propane, which evaporates upon contact with the air.
