A report about a kidnapping north of Alamo proved to be false but investigators said it all had to do with a drug deal gone wrong.
Law enforcement officials responded to Alberta Road north of Alamo on Wednesday afternoon following reports of a kidnapping.
But Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies ended up charging the alleged victims with making a false report to a peace officer.
Investigators told Action 4 News that 39-year-old Eduardo Villarreal Salinas and 27-year-old Javier Gonzalez made the whole thing up.
Deputies learned that the two men lied because somebody had stolen 200 pounds of marijuana from them.
Both Salinas and Gonzalez allegedly made up the story to protect themselves from the wrath of their employers.
The two men are expected to face a judge at the Hidalgo County Jail where they’ll be formally charged for the incident.
Gonzalez does not appear to have a criminal record but Salinas has criminal history going back to 1995, which includes a drug charge, four DWIs and violating a protective order.
Local law enforcement officials have been on alert for the past week following a series of drug cartel-related kidnappings in the Rio Grande Valley.
Action 4 News will provide more information as it becomes available.
