At least 20 inmates are dead and another 12 are wounded following an early Saturday morning prison brawl south of the border in Matamoros.
Tamaulipas officials confirmed it all took place at the CEDES prison in Matamoros early Saturday morning.
State police confirmed at a large-scale brawl took place between inmates.
Both state and federal police arrived at the scene but when the fighting ended at least 20 inmates were dead and another 12 were wounded.
Authorities have not released names of the dead or wounded but Tamaulipas officials have set up a station to attend to the families of the victims.
The incident remains under investigation.
Americans
There are a number of Americans being held at the CEDES prison in Matamoros on a variety of criminal charges.
Action 4 News contacted the American Consulate in Matamoros about their welfare.
The Consulate told Action 4 News that they had been in contact with Mexican authorities throughout the day.
At this time, there are no reports of American citizens either injured or killed during the incident.
Past Incidents
The brawl is the latest in a string of high-profile incidents to occur inside a prison in Tamaulipas.
Some 59 inmates escaped from a Nuevo Laredo prison following a brawl that left seven others dead in July.
Another 17 inmates escaped from a Reynosa prison after digging a tunnel to freedom in May.
Another 191 inmates escaped from the Nuevo Laredo prison back in December 2010.
Some 14 prisoners were killed in another prison brawl in Matamoros back in August 2010.
Another 41 inmates escaped from the Matamoros prison back in March 2010.

CD. VICTORIA, Tamaulipas.- La Secretaría de Seguridad Pública del Estado (SSPE) informa que este sábado 15 de octubre, en el Centro de Ejecución de Sanciones de Matamoros (CEDES), se registró una riña entre reclusos que tuvo como resultado la muerte de 20 internos y lesiones en otros 12.
Los hechos se registraron durante la madrugada, iniciándose con una riña protagonizada entre dos internos, sumándose posteriormente otros reos. Los custodios del penal restablecieron el orden con el apoyo de elementos de las Policías Estatal, Ministerial y Federal.
La Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado tomó conocimiento de los hechos, constituyéndose en el penal un Agente del Ministerio Público para dar fe de los mismos y ordenar el traslado de los cuerpos de los reos fallecidos al Servicio Médico Forense, para que se les practique la autopsia de ley.
La Procuraduría también giró instrucciones para que los encargados de la Mesa de Atención a Víctimas, Delegación Matamoros, estén atentos para proporcionar información y recibir peticiones de los familiares de los reclusos privados de la vida o heridos en la riña.
El Gobierno del Estado lamenta y condena estos hechos y a través de la Procuraduría General de Justicia realiza las investigaciones para deslindar responsabilidades y se sancione conforme a la ley.
