U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Pharr/Reynosa International Bridge seized approximately 22.18 pounds of cocaine Thursday.
The drugs had an estimated street value of $709,700.
According to officers a 20 year old Mexican national for Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico attempted to drive the drugs over the bridge in a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta.
However, a secondary inspection was ordered.
During that time, officers found eight packages of cocaine hidden within the vehicle’s rocker panels.
The male traveler was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigation (ICE-HSI) for further investigation.
Efrain Solis Jr., CBP Port Director Hidalgo/Pharr, said, “I commend our frontline officers for their excellent work in interdicting hard narcotics. Their commitment to keep drugs from entering our country is demonstrated every time an interception like this is made.”
