Michelle Gutierrez’s son, Darren, is on the Chargers freshman football team at Veteran's Memorial High School in Brownsville.

She keeps her phone handy, since her son calls her every day after football practice, letting her know to pick him up.

However, the pair will have to figure out another way to communicate, at least for the next few days, Gutierrez said her son's athletic locker was burglarized.

"About seven kids, their items were stolen," Gutierrez said. “My son had his cell phone stolen along with his PSP Go. It’s about $500 to $600.

Gutierrez said the other freshmen football players also had high-priced electronics stolen from their lockers while they were at a game in Port Isabel.

"There were some upset parents last night,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said the football players were instructed to leave their lockers opened.

"The kids said, ‘a coach told us not to lock our lockers. He said we're family and we should be able to trust each other,’” Gutierrez said.

Police reports have been filed with Brownsville Independent School District Police.

Gutierrez said she also met with administrators Friday to discuss the issue.

She wants to take things a bit further to Brownsville police, but said coaches and administrators told her they will do their best to resolve the issue. Still Gutierrez is not completely convinced.

"The only solution that they've offered us, is that they're going to wait and see if maybe a student talks and hopefully word gets around,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez doesn't blame all the football players, instead she believes it was the work or one or two, that are making the entire team look bad. As for her son, she said, it's a hard hit off the field.

"He's a little upset,” Gutierrez said. “I've already told him not to be bringing his stuff over here, but unfortunately you have to learn the hard way. Now we have to wait."

A BISD spokesperson said BISD Police is working on the case and they encourage anyone with information in this case to report it to Campus Police at (956) 408-0049.

Calls will remain anonymous.
