A Harlingen man is behind bars after he allegedly used an assault rifle to beat his wife during a domestic disturbance.

Harlingen police arrested 30-year-old Jose Roel Gonzales on multiple criminal charges early Sunday morning.

Investigators released details about the incident on Tuesday morning.

Police said Gonzales allegedly punched his common law wife and hit her with the barrel of an assault rifle at their East Taylor Avenue home.

Paramedics treated the woman for her injuries while police arrested Gonzales.

Officers arrested Gonzales on aggravated assault charges but also found Xanax and marijuana at the home prompting drug charges.

An investigation at the scene also revealed that Gonzales is a convicted felon and cannot legally own an assault rifle.

Gonzales appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge where he was issued a total of $130,000 dollars in bonds.
