More than 300 acres of a national wildlife refuge have been scored after a brushfire in western Willacy County.

It all happened off County Road 30 and Highway 186 around 4:15 p.m. Monday.

The fire quickly spread with winds pushing it towards the Hidalgo County line.

Firefighters from Willacy, Cameron and Hidalgo Counties arrived in the area to put out the blaze.

Raymondville Fire Chief Oscar Gutierrez told Action 4 News that the cause of the fire was not known.

Gutierrez said most of the fire had been put out by 9:45 p.m. Monday.
