A La Feria woman reported missing by her family has been found safe.
A concerned viewer called 9-1-1 with a tip after watching Action 4 News Thursday evening.
South Padre Island police told Action 4 News a tipster from McAllen called in to say Lupita Gonzalez was staying at a beach resort there.
Investigators quickly set-up surveillance at Isla Grand Beach Resort after Lupita was spotted on the premises.
“She was outside sitting in a cabana. She was free” said South Padre Island Chief Randy Smith. “She told us she was not being held against her will.”
This revelation surprised police since family members had filed missing person’s report with the La Feria Police Department this week.
Family members told La Feria Police Department Gonzalez had been taken against her will by her boyfriend Juan Rubalcava.
Gonzalez sister also told police he was armed and considered dangerous, and had been posting as a fake FBI agent.
Following the tip, the investigation lead police to an Isla Grand hotel room where they watched Gonzalez for hours.
“We watched her go in and out of her ground level room” said Chief Smith. “There were people around her in the courtyard and she never asked for help. We even sent a security guard passed her to see if she’d make an outcry”.
When police approached Gonzales, she stressed she was safe and had not taken against her will and claimed she was married to Rubalcava.
Police and hotel representatives searched the room and no weapons were found.
Gonzales told police she was happy and not in danger, but could not tell police where her so-called husband was located.
Police told Action 4 News they have not confirmed that the two are actually married.
Lupita Gonzalez was willing was questioned by both La Feria and South Padre Island officers.
South Padre Island has closed their case.
Lead investigators in La Feria have not been available for a comment just yet.
