Five gunmen are dead following two separate battles with Mexican soldiers in Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo.

Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) confirmed that the two battles both happened on Monday.

SEDENA officials reported soldiers were out on patrol when they came under gunfire in both incidents.

A total of five gunmen were killed in the two battles.

Authorities did not release neither the names of the gunmen nor the exact locations of where they were killed.

SEDENA officials reported that a total of seven assault rifles, one handgun, one grenade, two vehicles and ammunition were seized during two incidents.

The shootouts remain under investigation by Mexican federal officials.
