A tropical wave showing some potential of moving in the valley's direction is exactly what Raul Abrego has been preparing for this summer.

"I'm putting dirt in the back yard and all around the side of the house," said Abrego.

His property in Olmito takes a beating every time it rains.

"It's like a lake."

During hurricane season, the chances of his home taking in flood waters increases.

That's why Abrego is taking action.

His home sits 12 inches higher than the ground so he brought in several loads of dirt to raise the level of his backyard as well.

"24 loads of dirt and I use the tractor to spread it out."

Cameron County emergency management are keeping an eye on the tropical wave and say while raising land may not be an option for you, there are other ways you can prep your land this hurricane season and that includes checking on drainage ditches around your neighborhood.

"Contact your city leaders or county commissioner and let them know if the drainage ditch is clogged with debris or brush," said Barrera.

Cameron County's Emergency Manager Humberto Barrera says county crews already have sandbags in stock and will begin filling more if the wave becomes more threatening.

In the meantime, he reminds residents to stay on their toes throughout hurricane season.

"Complacency is always a problem," said Barrera.

That's not the case with Abrego who says close calls have encouraged him to take matters into his own hands now.

"I've been working on the dirt for a week now."

He's not going to wait until the next big storm is knocking at his door.
