An inmate at the McAllen City Jail is dead after suffering a heart attack that have been caused by a drug overdose.
Police told Action4 News that they were called out to the 1900 block of South 32nd Street in McAllen around 5:42 a.m. Monday.
Investigators said police received several calls for service about a man acting in a agitated manner.
Police said 37-year-old Jose Ignacio Palamo appeared to be ramming his head and body into parked cars and trying hide under them.
Officers restrained the 37-year-old man and took him to the McAllen City Jail.
Investigators believe Palomo was under the influence of drugs after they seized cocaine from the place where he was arrested.
Palomo was placed in a padded cell where jailers found him unconscious around 6:56 a.m. Monday.
Paramedics rushed Palomo to the Rio Grande Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary autopsy results show the preliminary cause of death was a cardiac arrest, possibly linked to a drug overdose.
Authorities have ordered a toxicology test.
Once the results come in, the case will be forwarded to the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office.
