Fernando Gonzalez works full-time to put food on the table for his two children.
He wishes his wife could work too.
"It's a struggle,” said Gonzalez.
Because Gonzalez’s wife is not yet a U.S. citizen, she cannot work.
Instead, she stays home with the kids.
She did not want to show her face on camera.
Her husband fears trouble with the law if she leaves the house.
Gonzalez hoped hiring immigration attorney Joel Guadalupe Tovar-Uresti would ensure his wife's chance at a work permit and citizenship.
A receipt shows he paid Tovar-Uresti $1,500.
When the attorney stopped answering Gonzalez's calls, Gonzalez's hopes turned to disappointment.
"I don't know what else to do,” said Gonzalez.
The attorney did not return calls to Action 4 News nor a message to his Facebook account.
Action 4 News also went to the building where the attorney reportedly worked.
The building’s owner said Tover-Uresti left over a year ago.
Since then, she said some of his clients have come in, making the same claim as Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said he's tried finding another immigration lawyer.
He said he’s been given a quote far above what he can afford.
He only wishes he could have his $1,500 back.
"That's like a month of groceries,” said Gonzalez.
Action 4 News did contact the State Bar of Texas.
They said Tovar-Uresti is not a member.
It is a requirement to be a member of the State Bar in order to practice law in Texas.
Action 4 News will continue trying to track down this attorney.
