Ahumada gets two years probation for reckless driving

A judge sentenced former Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada to two years probation during a Monday morning court appearance.

Ahumada appeared before Cameron County Court At-Law 1 Judge Arturo McDonald around 9 a.m. Monday.

The former Brownsville mayor had been facing a reckless driving charge and pleaded guilty before Judge McDonald.

Ahumada received the following sentence:

• Two years probation
• Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) victim impact panel classes
• Attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings once a week for 6 months
• Perform random urine analysis and breath testing
• 150 hours of community service

Brownsville police arrested Ahumada for DWI back in May 2010.

The case was prosecuted by Willacy County District Attorney Bernard Ammerman, who served as a special prosecutor in the case.

Ammerman released a statement on Twitter saying that prosecutors decided to file reckless driving instead of a DWI charge.

The special prosecutor said Ahumada did not submit to a breathalyzer test resulting in the suspension of his driver's license until July 7, 2012.

Ammerman said that two eye witnesses later came forward to independently confirm that Ahumada had only consumed about two alcoholic drinks that night.

Ammerman reported that prosecutors decided to file reckless driving because the state could prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

"The state and defense agreed that it was in the best interest of justice to have the defendant plea to the maximum amount of probation and fine in lieu of a trial," Ammerman said in his statement.

Ahumada lost his bid for mayor in May of this year.
