Eight Porter High School students who were arrested following an end-of-the-year prank will be allowed to participate in the school's graduation ceremony.
The eight seniors were all arrested early Thursday morning after they threw toilet paper on trees and used shoe polish to write messages on windows.
The students were identified as:
• Samuel Ivan Martinez
• Roberto Vidal
• Miguel Zamora
• Hugo Dante Salinas
• Humberto Valdez
• Josue Garcia
• Miguel Torres
• Francisco Santillan
Brownsville Independent School District officials reported that the teens wrote “Porter Rocks,” “Seniors” and “Class of 2011” on the windows.
The eight students were booked in the Brownsville City Jail on Class C misdemeanor criminal mischief and criminal trespassing charges.
Brownsville ISD officials reported on Friday that the school's principal decided to allow the students to participate in the school's graduation ceremony.
The teens will have to commit to serving 80 hours of community service at Porter High School in order to participate in graduation.
School district officials released the following statement:
The Porter High School students arrested as the result of a senior prank on Thursday, June 2 will be allowed to participate in their graduation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, June 4. Dora Sauceda, Porter’s principal, made the decision today after speaking to the students and their parents. The students will be asked to commit to performing 80 hours of supervised community service at the Porter campus. The decision was based on the fact that the students had no previous disciplinary history nor malicious intent. Brownsville ISD is in support of the Porter principal’s decision.
We hope that this puts this matter to rest.
