A statewide ban on texting while driving is already on Governor Perry's desk awaiting his signature.

Many can agree that texting while driving is distracting.

"Texting and driving it just doesn't go. It's like drinking and driving," said Juan Gavana, who supports the measure.

Amanda Zuniga admits she's guilty of texting while driving.

"I have. I do it myself, but i know i shouldn't," said Zuniga.

She said a law against texting while driving across the state would make her think twice.

"You could save some lives out there," she said.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) doesn't normally comment on bills, but Director of Transportation Operations Jesus Leal said TXDOT is a strong advocate of no texting while driving.

"We tell all our employees definitely do not text while driving," said Leal.

Leal said its not only distracting but dangerous.

"Any bit of distraction can cause an accident in an instant," he said.

Under the bill, those caught texting while driving could be fined up to 200 dollars and get up to 30 days in jail.

The texting while driving ban was added to HB 242, a bill that would give retired peace officers permission to carry a concealed handgun.
