A homeowner and one of seven suspects are behind bars following a home invasion in Alton where authorities found at least 15 pounds of marijuana at the scene.

It all happened off Schuerbach Rd and 5 Mile Line near Alton around 12:49 a.m. Wednesday.

Homeowner Jerry Tovar told Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies that seven armed men stormed his home.

The men shot at Tovar and shot his dog before fleeing the scene but left behind an Isuzu Trooper that had been involved in a wreck.

Investigators told Action 4 News that deputies arrested Tovar after finding 15 pounds of marijuana at his home.

Deputies said the Isuzu Trooper's owner Juan R Garza tried to report his vehcile stolen but was identified as one of the home invaders by Tovar.

Both men remain in custody where they are expected to arraigned.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said deputies are still trying to identify the other suspects in the case.

Court records show that Tovar has an extensive criminal record with seven assaults, one drug case and two criminal trespasses.

Garza has two previous arrests and is on probation for a possession of marijuana case.

“As in the majority of home invasions, the victims either has a relationship with the suspects or the victims are in the drug business as is in this case," Sheriff Treviño said.
