Harlingen Fire Department officials have confirmed that a fire at a local hotel is being investigated as an arson case.

It all happened around 5:23 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the old Sun Valley Hotel off South 77 Sunshine Strip.

Fire department officials said the fire was contained to the center of the building.

The old hotel has been abandoned for several years after a fire gutted its business offices.

Harlingen City Attorney Roxanne Cotroneo said the city has been working the owner to get the building demolished.

Again, fire investigators are treating this case are arson.

They say they are looking into witness reports that some children were playing in the area and may be connected to the blaze.

Cotroneo said she spoke with the owner and both agree the hotel building should be demolished.

They plan to meet on Monday and determine when that will happen.
