Four kidnapped telephone company workers are safe and back with their families after being rescued by Mexican marines south of the border.

It happened on highway outside Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas on Friday.

The Mexican Navy reported on Tuesday that marines patrolling the area were flagged down by two men.

The men claimed to be part of a group of four telephone company workers who were in a company and on the way to fix a communication tower when they stopped by armed men.

The two men managed to escape on foot but their two other co-workers were taken away by the armed men.

Marines searched the backgrounds in the area and found an abandoned truck with the two other telephone company workers inside.

The suspects fled the scene shortly before marines arrived.

No suspects have been identified or arrested in the case.

Ciudad Mier is located south of the border in area between Falcon Dam and Roma.
