Family members of the late La Joya Police Chief Jose Del Angel told Action 4 News that they want him to be remembered for his accomplishments.
Del Angel's family spent Saturday receiving visitors at the L & I Funeral Home in Peñitas.
The viewing continues on Sunday with a funeral service at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in La Joya on Monday.
Burial is expected to follow at a cemetery in Sullivan City.
Del Angel was found dead inside a patrol unit on Thursday.
Investigators told Action 4 News that he shot himself to death using his police department-issued weapon.
A makeshift memorial for Del Angel has been set up outside the La Joya Police Department.
Family members spoke to Action 4 News outside the funeral home.
Del Angel's cousin Irma Quejano said she wants him to be remembered as an honorable and hard-working man.
She family the wants him to be remembered for his accomplishments during his tenure as police chief.
"One should realize all the patrol units and new equipment they've received," Quejano said in Spanish. "All he wanted was the latest technology for his employees with everything happening on the other side of the border. He always was looking to protect his employees."
Quejano said she last saw Del Angel during a family event back on April 30th where she last spoke to him.
"I told him, 'The whole family only gets together for weddings and funerals," Quejano said in Spanish. "And now you see...here we are."
