Former Weslaco ISD trustee charged in public corruption case

A former Weslaco ISD official is expected to face a judge in Houston after being accused in a public corruption case.

Federal court records show a criminal information was filed in Houston against former trustee Joe Marines.

According to the criminal information, the case is related to the bidding process for the renovation and construction of Roosevelt Elementary School.

The school is located at 814 East Plaza Street just northeast of downtown.

The criminal information shows that Marines took a $1,500 dollar bribe to provide advantages to the bidder back in August 2006.

The name of the contractor was not immediately available.

Marines is expected to make his initial appearance before U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Smith in Houston next Tuesday.

If convicted, Marines could face up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 dollar fine.
