“Jane” is a resident at Siesta Mobile Home Park in Brownsville.
On Wednesday morning, word spread through her neighborhood that a shooting had occurred yards from her home at Coffee and Old Port Isabel Roads on Tuesday night.
She thinks this sort of violence is pouring over from Mexico.
“I can’t believe this is going on here because I have a two-year-old daughter," Jane said. “What about if something would’ve happened? If I (had been at the store or) something? A lot of innocent people are losing their lives and have nothing to do with all of this."
Brownsville police said 39-year-old Eluterio Gonzalez, manager of the night club Vertigo, was driving alone in his truck when his life was nearly taken away.
They said Gonzalez was traveling south on Old Port Isabel Road and stopped at a red light. At that moment, police said two, armed men drove-up beside him, and opened fire from their vehicle.
"He was struck several times on his left side and is currently at a local hospital in stable condition," a police spokesperson said.
Police have not said how many times Gonzalez was shot, but on the night of the shooting, investigators placed markings on at least seven bullet casings.
Investigators are trying to determine a motive, but said they don’t suspect the shooting was an attempted robbery, since nothing was taken from the victim.
Jane said if authorities don’t toughen-up on these type of crimes, things could soon get out of hand like in other countries.
