At the end of classes on Tuesday, students rushed home from Donna High School but three classmates were not there.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the three girls cut classes and went to a nearby canal where two of them ended up in the water.

One of the girls is recovering in a local hospital after she almost drowned while the other suffered cuts and bruises.

Action 4 News spokes to students at Donna High School about the incident.

They said the girls would have been safe and sound, if they hadn’t played hooky.

"It comes with consequences,” said student Daisy Rodriguez. “They think it's all fun and games, but then when it comes to the real deal, they don't know what they're going to do. So I think it's very bad."

Ninth grader Joshua Gonzalez agreed.

"I think they made a big mistake by skipping school cause they shouldn't have done that in the first place,” Gonzalez said.

It’s advice these teens hope their classmates will follow.

They said teens should respect their parents by not giving them more to worry about, especially when they think you are safe at school.

Action 4 News also spoke to mothers picking up their children from school.

They said parents need to have more communication with their children, so that their teen will be more likely to take their advice and avoid dangerous situations.
