Fourth suspect remains in custody

Authorities have recovered a murder weapon allegedly used to kill a Rio Hondo ISD teacher.

The Cameron County Sheriff's Department held a Wednesday afternoon press conference to discuss the latest developments in the case.

Sheriff Oma Lucio said deputies recovered the weapon used to kill Rio Hondo Intermediate School teacher Sonia Perez.

According to court doucments, investigators believe she may have been killed with a gun.

Sheriff Lucio said a fourth suspect in the case has not been charged but is being held for questioning.

Deputies arrested 39-year-old Alfredo Castañeda on Tuesday for a probation violation in a Kleberg County marijuana case.

Investigators told Action 4 News that he's being held for questioning in the shooting death of Sonia Perez.

The third grade teacher's husband Julio Cesar Perez was arrested over the weekend for hiring a hitman to kill his wife.

Investigators alleged that the El Ranchito pastor wanted to cash in on a life insurance policy and used middleman Gabriel Apolinar Escalante to hire hitman Daniel Flores Lopez.

Both Escalante and Lopez have been arrested.

Investigators believe that Castañeda may have given a ride to Lopez after he killed Sonia Perez.
