Hidalgo County Sheriff Deputies have arrested nearly 100 gang members since they started Operation Street Sweep.

The operation’s purpose is to get those gang members wanted for various crimes off the streets.

It takes a lot of time, planning, and organization to catch some of the most sought after gang members in Hidalgo County.

"From Chicano Brotherhood to HPL's-- we've also been arresting a lot of Valluco's," Senior Deputy Moreno said.

Armed with warrants, bulletproof vests, and guns teams disperse throughout the county with one mission, to catch the worst of the worst.

Some leads run cold.

"We went looking for him one time and they told us he wasn't there," Moreno said during a team discussion on a wanted gang member.

But there are other leads that land them exactly to who they want.

"We'll have those three units and then we'll take the lead to the front of the house as soon as they're set up,” Moreno explained as he and his team approached a gang member’s home. “We know this guy is a runner."

Jose ‘Killer’ Garcia was wanted for attempted capital murder.

Last year he allegedly ordered a hit on rival Chicano gang members.

That shooting left a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the face and Garcia on the run.

Garcia was arrested but never made his court date.

Deputies did not find ‘Killer’ at his home but they did find him somewhere else, a busy Flea Market in Donna.

"There he is right there," Moreno said.

No stranger to the law, ‘Killer’ told deputies he had no idea why they were arresting him.

He also did not want to claim gang affiliation.

Officers said this could pose a problem for ‘Killer’ when he gets booked into County.

Authorities said ‘Killer’ used to be a high- ranking member of the Chicano Brotherhood.

Deputies said, ‘Killer’ has since switched to lead Brown Pride.

If ‘Killer’ is put in the wrong Pod of the jail it could turn into a potentially deadly situation.

With one more gang member off the street Hidalgo County Sheriff deputies will suit up and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

The operation will continue through April.

Sheriff Lupe Trevino said, since the operation started, they have seen a decrease in property and violent crimes.
