A convicted sex offender from Los Fresnos is behind bars after he allegedly failed to update his information with state officials.

Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested 56-year-old Jose Alberto Barrera on a sex offender registry violation on Tuesday.

Deputies report that Barrera failed to update his information back in February.

Barrera’s last known address was at 134 Limon Street in Los Fresnos.

State records show that he was sentenced to 20 years in prison back in 1987 for the rape of an 11-year-old girl.

The Sex Offender Database show that Barrera is unemployed and classified as low risk.

Under Texas state law, convicted sex offenders are supposed to update their information with law enforcement officials.

Barrera appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Court Judge Luis Saenz on Wednesday morning where he was issued a $10,000 dollar bond.
