Matamoros man caught smuggling AK-47 in box for toy scooter

A Matamoros man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after he tried to smuggle an AK-47 into Mexico.

Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested 21-year-old Nestor Omar Sauceda-Trevino on weapons charges on Monday.

Court records released in the case on Wednesday show that he was about to walk into Mexico at the Gateway International Bridge when he was stopped for an outbound inspection.

Customs officers looked through a large box for a toy scooter and found an AK-47 inside.

Sauceda-Treviño that a man named “Quirino” offered him $100 dollars if he could bring the gun into Mexico.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio told Action 4 News that the AK-47 was headed into the hands of drug cartel members.

The case ended up in Brownsville's federal court where records show that it was Sauceda-Treviño’s first time trying to smuggle a weapon.

The 21-year-old Matamoros man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Ronald Morgan on Tuesday morning.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Sauceda-Treviño until a Friday morning hearing.
