Every Thursday, Maria Concepcion Reyna travels from Reynosa to Border Missions in Hidalgo.
“I didn’t come last Thursday because it was too cold,” Reyna told Action 4 News.
It was that cold weather that had Reyna stocking up on food and warmer clothes. She said these are items she cannot afford on her own.
Reyna said her family survives on $100 a week.
She said the help from Border Missions has helped her family get through this recent cold snap.
"In a month we have to pay the gas bill, water bill, and then we stay cold because there is no other money to get blankets or warm clothes," Reyna said.
Her friend Marta Vallerio is in the same boat.
Vallerio said she is thankful there are people on the U.S. side will to help her—because the help in Mexico is few and far between.
"They help us with things like tomatoes and bread,” said Vallerio. “The little food that they give us helps curb our hunger because we have very little or no money."
Marta will soon have to depend on friends to help her get these supplies she needs to survive.
Her Visa expires on Saturday and she does not have enough money to renew it.
Border Missions does not cater only to Mexican citizens. The group welcomes everyone who needs food or clothes to stop by.
