A 12-year-old boy is detained at Jaime Escalante Middle School Thursday for bringing a semi-automatic handgun to school.

PSJA school administrators told Action 4 News the 6th grade boy had been displaying the gun to students in a restroom at the Escalante Middle School at SouthWest High School campus on East Rancho Blanco Road.

“Several students reported this to their teacher who immediately removed the student from the classroom and alerted a nearby security officer.”

“The gun was immediately secured” said PJSA spokeswoman Arianna Hernandez.

Pharr police confiscated the semi-automatic handgun.

Police say they did not find any ammunition or gun clip.

“There is no indication that the student intended to threaten anyone with the weapon and is believed that he had take it to school to show around to friends” said Sgt. Santiago Solis.

“We visited with the parents concerning the ownership of the weapon.”

“The investigation is continuing to determine ownership of the weapon and how it was made accessible to the minor” said Sgt. Solis.

Letters are being set home to the parents.

The 12-year-old will be detained at the Hidalgo County Juvenile Detention Center.
