Rio Grande City is now the latest Rio Grande Valley city to consider an ordinance taking aim at smoking in public places.
The city commission is taking a look at proposed ordinance at their noon meeting on Wednesday.
City Manager Juan Zuniga told Action 4 News that it's the first reading for the ordinance.
He said city leaders are looking at how to limit smoking in city-owned facilities, restaurants, bars, bingo halls and other public places.
Zuniga said nothing is set but they are considering giving these places to option to create smoking and non-smoking sections.
Another option, he said, would be allow smoking in public places where alcohol makes up more than 70 percent of a business' gross sales.
Rio Grande City leaders are also looking at an ordinance about how close to schools restaurants and other businesses can sell alcohol.
The public is invited to comment. Zuniga said the ordinance would have its second reading at least 15 days after the first reading.
Among the Valley cities with smoking ordinances are Harlingen and McAllen.
