Doug Kvalvog owner of the New Work Out in Brownsville said during his peak enrollment season in January and February, "probably 99 percent of the people want to lose weight."After the holiday feasting, he said, many people find it easy to include a resolution to lose weight.

"First of all, they have to make a commitment and then they have to have patience,” Kvalvog said. “Because it took time to put it on its going takes time to take it off."

Kvalvog said if people want to be successful in their weight-loss goals, they will have to commit to a healthier diet and working out at least three times a week.

He said many times the hardest part is walking into the gym.

"Once they get here and once they start a routine,” Kvalvog said, “it becomes a habit it actually gets in your blood and you actually want to continue."

Making small changes are the key to success, in other words, "smaller portions, less caloric intake" don't bite off more than you can chew.

However, some aren't waiting till the New Year to get in shape.

Luis Angel Esparza knows it'll take many hours at the gym to become a mixed martial arts fighter.

"I just take my protein after I work out and I do as much as I can,” Esparza said. “I do separate body parts a day, at least five to six times out of the week and a healthy diet. I just eat my grilled chicken cut out the bad carbohydrates."

Others are trying to pack some pounds and therefore have to try a different approach.

"If you want to gain weight, gain muscle, just pretty much eat anything you can find,” Norman Matt Broussard. “High calories, come to the gym seven times a week, lift higher weights and you will expect results."
