A man accused of robbing a Weslaco convenience store and firing on officers during a chase is behind bars after investigators learned he joined the U.S. Marines.

Weslaco police took custody of 18-year-old Aflredo Calderon, Jr. at McAllen's Miller International Airport on Tuesday night.

Calderon is facing aggravated robbery, criminal attempted capital murder and evading arrest charges.

Police told Action 4 News that Calderon is the suspect in the July 2009 armed robbery of a Stripes convenience store off FM 1015 and Sugar Cane Drive.

Investigators said Calderon led authorities on a chase where he allegedly opened fire on police officers.

Calderon abandoned the car and got away on foot but police said they learned his identity, that he lived in Alamo and that he had joined the Marines following the incident.

Weslaco police recently contacted the Marines in California where they took Calderon into custody and held him until he could be extradited to Texas.

Calderon appeared before a Weslaco municipal judge on Wednesday morning where he was issued $355,000 dollars in bonds.
