It was 1910 when a National Railway system between Brownsville and Matamoros was first opened.

A Hundred Years later, the city of Brownsville came together to celebrate the bridges long journey and its accomplishments.

According to the president and CEO of the bridge, John Hopkins, in 1910 they gathered people from Brownsville and Matamoros to take a picture, on Thursday; he says they wanted to re-live that moment.

The bridge was originally designed as a swing bridge to accommodate steamboat traffic, but by the time it was completed, the river traffic had ceased.

As the cities of Brownsville and Matamoros continues to grow, so does the volume of traffic, and that is why the bridge has been expanded three times from 1953 to the latest 4 lane bridge, which was built in 1997.

Mr. Hopkins says there are plans to move the railroad system to another location to allow for another lane to be opened for drivers.

That should be completed in two years.
