A family in San Benito is preparing two funerals; one is for their grandma and another for their uncle.

91-year-old Elvira Rodriguez Estrada and her son-in-law 59-year-old Joel Abrego were killed in a car accident Thanksgiving Day.

They, along with 63-year-old Josephina Abrego, were driving to Robstown.

Family said they planned to leave a wreath at the site where Estrada’s son died in a car accident 20 years earlier.

Instead, all three became victims of their own car accident.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Joel Abrego was pronounced dead at the scene.

Estrada was reportedly taken to a Corpus Christi hospital where her family made the decision to take her off life support.

Josephina Abrego suffered severe head and arm injuries.

She is now back home in San Benito, recovering from her injuries, without her husband or mother.

Family described Josephina’s mother, Elvira Rodriguez Estrada as their stronghold, an avid gardener and a loving grandma.

"I just liked to tease her and give her a hug,” said Estrada’s nephew Ruben Huerta, “She was a little thing, but she was very active. She was real sweet."

Huerta said he visited Estrada often at her San Benito home where she lived with Josephina and Joel.

“Joel was very helpful, if you needed a ride or whatever," said Huerta.

Huerta said he’s filled with sadness, but also anger, over the man who was allegedly driving drunk when he hit the family.

Christopher Scott Taylor is now charged with driving while intoxicated.

According to the Nueces County Sheriff’s Department, it’s at least his third offense of D.W.I.

Taylor remains in the Nueces County Jail with a $25,000 bond.

That amount could go up if Taylor is charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Huerta said Taylor should have never been allowed behind the wheel.

"I mean two people got killed,” said Huerta, “Two sweet people, innocent people.”
