Authorities are reporting that 11 members of the drug cartel los Zetas are dead and two more are behind bars following an intense battle on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake.
Mexico's Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) reported that the gun battle took place on the Mexican side of Falcon Dam in Nueva Ciudad Guerrero Wednesday afternoon.
SEDENA officials reported that soldiers were patrolling the area around 4 p.m. Wednesday when they investigated a tip about armed men downtown off Boulevard Miguel Hidalgo.
Soldiers arrived to the building when then came under fire.
When the battle ended, 11 gunmen were dead and suspects were left alive.
SEDENA officials reported that Zetas members Carlos Ambrosio Gonzalez-Mosinas and Oscar Salomon Rangel were arrested and turned over to federal officials for prosecution.
Mexican soldiers reported seizing:
• 25.25 pounds of marijuana
• 9 assault rifles
• 4 handguns
• 1 grenade launcher
• 22 ammo clips
American officials were put on alert at the Falcon Dam border crossing and at the Roma International Bridge due to the incident.
