He’s been called one of San Benito’s most iconic political figures, and now, the former mayor has passed away.

Cesar Gonzalez passed away early Wednesday afternoon at the age of 81.

The former Mayor and Meat Market owner was known to most as an instrumental and inspirational person in the community.

Gonzalez served three terms as mayor with his last in 2006.

Action 4 News spoke to former Commissioner Victor Treviño, who says Gonzalez loved the City of San Benito and did all he ever could to put the city on the map.

“Gonzalez was vocal about any issue, he spoke his mind," Treviño said.

Cesar Gonzalez will be missed.
