Sylvia Handy remains free almost a month past prison date

A former Hidalgo County Commissioner convicted of harboring illegal aliens remains free almost a month after reported for her federal prison assignment.

Former Precinct 1 Commissioner Sylvia Handy was sentenced to two and a half years for her role in the federal case.

Handy reported to the U.S. Marshals for her prison assignment on August 20th  but never started her sentence.

Her attorney Al Alvarez told Action 4 News that his client was told there was no availability in the prison and that they would contact her when she could go back.

The former Precinct 1 commissioner remains free pending her formal prison assignment.
