Chief Quirno Munoz was surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues as he announced his departure from the Edinburg Police Department.

"I'm one of those fortunate few that have journeyed though 34 years of doing what I love," said Munoz.

At one point he fought back tears as he thanked everyone for their support over the years.

"I want to thank my family for their support and sacrifices they've made during my 34 years as a police officer," said Munoz.

The timing of Chief Munoz's retirement seemed odd to some.

During the news conference he was asked if he resigned on his own or was he forced into it.

The chief skirted around the issue and said he thought, because October was the beginning of the fiscal year, that the October 15th departure date was best.

"Well, really this was my decision and I've been contemplating it for a good while now," said Munoz.

"One of my target dates was this year to retire and I'm making my decision to move on."

Edinburg City Manager, Ramiro Garza backs up the Chief's statement. He said Munoz's departure had nothing to do with this fiscal year or the Chief's performance.

In the months following Chief Munoz's retirement, Assistant Chief Peter De La Garza will take over as Interim Police Chief.
