A Florida man behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after being caught trying to smuggle more than $663,000 dollars worth of heroin into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 40-year-old Carmelo Trujillo-Estrada under federal drug charges Monday.

Trujillo-Estrada drove up from Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge in a Toyota Corolla.

Customs officers allegedly found five bricks with 8.2 pounds of heroin inside a metal box inside his car.

The drugs are reportedly worth more than $663,143 dollars

Trujillo-Estrada appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old man is a Mexican national but with permanent legal residency in Dade City, Florida.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Trujillo-Estrada until a Friday morning hearing.
