The lower Rio Grande Valley in the clear when it comes to passing air quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

In a meeting at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality base in Harlingen, experts in the field explained the calculation of ozone design values and how Cameron County measures way below the current standard, which is a good thing, but the EPA's standard is up for review and could change in the next few months.

If so, the new requirements could put the valley at risk for not making the cut and therefore would not be in compliance with air quality standards.

According to the TCEQ, most of the valley's damaging pollutants come from moving vehicles, but federal standards on emissions have helped keep it under control.

They remind residents here that the air if safe to breathe and the goal now is to keep it that way.
