Mercedes Independent School District Superintendent Beto D. Gonzalez is resigning from his post.

Gonzalez handed in his letter of resignation during the district's regular school board meeting on Monday.

The resignation is effective on June 30th.

Gonzalez is leaving the district to take a job as Head of the Division/College of Education and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University at San Antonio.

Gonzalez issued the following statement in his last "Superintendent's Column":

Mercedes Parents and Citizens,

It is with both gratitude and humility that I inform you of my resignation as Superintendent of Schools effective June 30, 2010.  After much prayer, consideration, and consultation with my mentors, I have decided (jointly with my family) to accept a position as Head of the Division/College of Education and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University at San Antonio.  Serving in this position promises the opportunity to serve future educators and developing leaders from all parts and walks of life on a broader platform.

I feel privileged and honored to have addressed the needs and goals of this School Board and School District as your Superintendent.  To date, I am happy to report the district's curriculum has been entirely reformed and our conglomerate AEIS scores indicate the District is headed in the right direction.  A Long Range Strategic Plan for Mercedes ISD will be submitted to you in order to ensure the Board Goals and our students needs are kept as the main target.  All efforts will be made to ensure a smooth transition involving all operations and leadership aspects of the district.

The City of Mercedes is a wonderful community, where all children are granted the opportunity to learn and succeed.  I continue to believe the children of this community will be able to positively impact the destinies of our country.  As I leave this post, I know the District is now more Student Focused, Data Driven, Results Oriented, Effective, and Efficient.

With Warm Regards,

Beto D. Gonzalez
Superintendent of Schools
