SAN BENITO -- Today is the first day of early voting in San Benito.

The special election will fill two city commission seats vacated after former Mayor Joe Hernandez and former Commissioner René Fairas were declared ineligible for office for owing back-taxes.

Farias spoke to Action 4 News about the incident.

“The delinquent taxes that we had were on a business that was registered under my wife's name but I took responsibility that’s why I forfeited my position,” he said.

Since he is back on track with his finances, Farias decided to run again for his former seat but not without some competition.

Daniel Cortez and Tony Gonzales are running against Farias for City Commissioner Place 1.

Voters will also have the opportunity to vote for Commissioner Place 2, the seat left by now Mayor Jack Garcia.

The contenders on that race are Joe Avila, René Villafranco, and José Morales.

Early voting runs through June 15th at city hall and Election Day is June 19th.
