The Rio Grande Valley is famous for being one of the nation’s top spots for birds and butterflies.

But the Valley is becoming increasingly well known for its amazing variety of dragonflies with more than a hundred species of dragonflies and damselflies occurring here.

This is a wonderful time of the year to enjoy these colorful insects as many have recently hatched out.

You may see a roseate skimmer, eastern pond hawk or band-winged dragonlet.

And if you are looking for a weekend outing with the family…how about a dragonfly adventure?

The Valley Nature Center in Weslaco is teaming up with Estero Llano Grande State Park for the annual Dragonfly Days celebration set for May 14th – 16th.

Valley Nature Center Education Director Susan Hoehne told The Nature Report the event promises to display a wide variety of dragonflies.

“This year it is going to be a different Dragonfly Days, because we are concentrating on just families coming to this, so it is going to be three fun filled days of dragonfly events for families,” she said.

In addition to plenty of dragonfly watching, there will be a series of family oriented events taking place beginning Friday evening from 6 to 9 pm at the Valley Nature Center.

“We have Lucas Miller, the Singing Zoologist coming to perform,” Hoehne said. “Also, we have Yellowhammer, Mike Lewis will come in, and he will be singing.   We have a lot of entertainment this time, kids crafts, all sorts of fun activities.”

But the main attraction will be the vibrant dragonflies.
