Authorities are investigating the Sunday afternoon death of a Brownsville man who was allegedly killed in a fishing accident northwest of Austin.

Travis County Sheriff’s Office deputies told Action 4 News that Jesus Ricardo Chavez died in the fatal accident.

Rescuers were called to Milton Reimers Ranch Park off Hamilton Pool Road northwest of Austin around 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Family members told investigators that 26-year-old Chavez was setting a trotline across the Pedernales River when he went under.

Deputies told Action 4 News that rescuers found Chavez’s body in about 12 feet of water, tangled in the trotline.

Rescuers cut his body from the line and brought him to shore but authorities later pronounced him dead at 1:27 p.m. Sunday.

Relatives told deputies that the Brownsville man had come to visit his brother in Austin and they went fishing at the park.

Investigators said it will take weeks for an official autopsy report but believe the cause of Chavez’s death is an accidental freshwater drowning.

No word on funeral arrangements.
