Firefighters expected strong winds to hurt their efforts in putting out a fire at a used clothing store in downtown Brownsville Friday.

“That's going to hamper our progress to get this fire under control, and you can hear that explosion,” said Brownsville Fire Marshal Ben Nuñez.

While Action 4 News interviewed the fire marshal, explosions could be heard coming from the burning building.

Nuñez said they could be exploding gas cans or crashing concrete walls.

"So it's still a very dangerous situation for us to enter right now,” said Nuñez.

Streets were blocked off while firefighters worked near Ninth and Washington, causing traffic to back up as drivers and walkers stopped to stare at the smoke.

One man said he was the first to see the flames around 1:30 Friday morning.

He said he was working security downtown, a career that's prepared him for emergencies like the fire.

"I'm already used to it,” he said in Spanish.

Fire Marshal Nuñez said investigation into the cause of the fire will begin Monday.

He said no injuries have been reported, but it's still too early to tell if someone was hurt.

"We don't know for sure, and that's something we'll be looking into next week,” said Nuñez.
