A Brownsville man is behind bars after he allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl he was supposed to be babysitting.
Brownsville police arrested 42-year-old Sotero Betancourt on an aggravated sexual assault of a child charge late Monday afternoon.
Investigators told Action 4 News that they received a call reporting the rape of a child in an area behind the University of Texas at Brownsville's ITEC Campus around 5:15 p.m. Monday.
A witness told police he saw the sexual assault in progress and chased Betancourt.
A security guard allegedly saw Betancourt pushing a stroller and stopped him.
Officers learned that Betancourt was supposed to be babysitting the 3-year-old girl and her 1-year-old sister.
Betancourt allegedly took them out for walk when the alleged incident happened.
Investigators told Action 4 News that the children are in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Betancourt faced a Brownsville municipal judge on Tuesday morning where he was given a $50,000 dollar bond.
