Action 4 News has learned that Rio Hondo Mayro Alonzo Garza asked police not to discuss his son's domestic violence arrest with the media.
Rio Hondo Police Department officers arrested 26-year-old Abram Garza on an assault by strangulation charge early Friday morning.
Court records obtained by Action 4 News show that Garza is accused of assaulting his wife during a domestic violence incident.
Garza's wife told police she was preparing a bottle for their infant son when he returned home intoxicated.
She told investigators that he was upset that he couldn't find his wallet and asked her to come outside.
The two got in an argument and Garza allegedly responded by choking her.
The Rio Hondo woman called 911 but hung up, threw the phone at Garza and went to bed.
Garza allegedly came back in their room to start the argument again.
The wife told police that Garza punched her several times causing her black out.
She told investigators that she called 911 after regaining consciousness.
A petition for an emergency protection order shows she was taken to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlignen with injuries to her eyes, face and neck.
A probable cause affidavit filed in the case show that Rio Hondo Mayor Alonzo Garza asked a Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputy and a Rio Hondo police officer not to discuss his son's arrest with the media.
Action 4 News learned about the incident through Cameron County Jail records.
Rio Hondo police gave an interview about the case on Monday afternoon but Mayor Garza could not be reached for comment.
Action 4 News could not enter the family's South Reynolds Street property while employees at City Hall told Action 4 News that Mayor Garza told them he would not be coming there on Monday.
Abram Garza appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Luis Saenz on Friday where he was given a $50,000 dollar bond.
Public records show Garza has previous arrests for DWI, criminal mischief and assault.
He remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
