LAGUNA VISTA -- A fire several weeks ago destroyed Alfoli De Dios Church in Laguna Heights.
“It’s sad,” said Blanca Rivera, the pastor’s wife.
Now, the congregation worships in the kitchen because it’s the only area in the church left with a roof.
“These folks didn’t ask for this,” said Odelia Moya from Christ Harbor Church, another church in the community.
A fire from a neighboring mobile home had spread to the church.
The second floor was completely destroyed, and the pastor said it’s unbearable to see his congregation without a worship place.
“After we did this and built them up altogether as a family…as a church, and then to see all this down and people crying around, that hurt me,” said Pastor Manuel Rivera.
It also hurt community members from a different church.
“It has broken my heart to see what these people are going through,” said Moya.
She’s from the Christ Harbor Church, and she’s calling for action to get this church rebuilt.
“We’re going to do whatever we have to (in order) to rebuild this church, but we need the help of the community,” said Moya.
The Christ Harbor Church plans to organize a fundraiser to rebuild the Alfoli de Dios Church.
They plan to have an event with music, food, games, a silent auction and bake sale on May 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Christ Harbor Church in Laguna Vista.
They are asking for volunteers and donations to make this possible.
Those who would like to help can call Christ Harbor Church at 956-943-5595 or Alfoli De Dios Church at 956-433-1788.
