The Willacy County judge’s race was between interim judge Aurelio Guerra and John Gonzales.

Gonzales was one of the Willacy County candidates at the courthouse waiting for numbers.

“If the results don’t come our way, we can be satisfied that we worked hard,” said Gonzales.

As Gonzales waited, he made calculations.

“Whichever way comes out, we’re satisfied we did a good job,” said Gonzales.

And finally, he heard the answer he wanted.

He walked away with the most votes on election night.

Action 4 News asked Gonzales what his plans are now.

“Our plans are to turn the county around, “ he said. “We’ve lost a lot of jobs. Unemployment has doubled in the last three years, and we’ve lost a number of businesses. Poverty rates have gone up, and our illiteracy rates have gone up. Those are my main focal points, and we need to bring this county back up to par and correct the infrastructure,” said Gonzales.

When his opponent Aurelio Guerra heard the news that his opponent got more votes, he said both Gonzales and he ran a good race.

He also told Action 4 News that he thinks the county will continue to do well in the hands of Gonzales.
