SAN BENITO -- A former San Benito wastewater supervisor has been charged with theft.
Rene Cruz is accused of bilking the city out of thousands of dollars since 2007
Lieutenant Martin Morales, with the San Benito Police Department, said Cruz purchased more than $5700 worth of auto parts for his personal vehicle at the city's expense.
Cruz reportedly used a friend, who worked at a Napa Auto Parts store, to change invoices to make them appear like the parts being purchased were city-work oriented, according to Lt. Morales.
Police identified Cruz’s alleged accomplice as Ernesto Gomez.
Both Gomez and Cruz were charged with Felony Theft.
Cruz has since resigned.
