It’s been almost a year since Juanita Davis was attacked at her Harlingen jewelry store.
She was beaten, kicked, stepped on and left alone, bleeding on the ground, until her postman discovered her.
Her attacker, Miguel Angel Alvarado, got a plea deal Tuesday for 70 years in prison.
Still, Davis said she’s disappointed.
“He doesn’t need to be alive, because he wanted to kill me,” said Davis.
Davis was not Alvarado’s only victim.
He also beat up and stole from a 53-year-old construction worker, leaving him unconscious in a closet.
Cameron County Assistant District Attorney Chuck Mattingly said 70 years is a fair sentence for Alvarado’s actions.
"Seventy years is more than fair,” said Mattingly. “I believe it's what a crime of this magnitude requires."
Nonetheless, Davis said she still does not feel safe.
She said she’s lost her faith in the community and plans to sell her jewelry shop so she can move back to Mexico.
Alvarado received 70 years in prison as part of a plea deal for two charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
He was charged for escape after allegedly switching bracelets with another inmate and leaving the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center.
That charge was dismissed, and the Cameron County District Attorney’s office said they are hoping to prosecute a different defendant for that charge.
